Thirstgate

Terms of use

Terms of use

Last updated 26 October 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and Obadia Mwakyusa (“we”, “us”) for your use of the Thirstgate iPhone app and Thirstgate Plus. By downloading or using Thirstgate you agree to them. They apply alongside Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the “Apple EULA”). If the two conflict, these terms apply to the extent the Apple EULA allows.

1. Not medical advice

Thirstgate is a habit and focus tool, not a medical device. Its goals, reminders and information about water are general and are not medical advice. How much water you need depends on your body, health, activity and climate. If you have a heart, kidney or liver condition, are pregnant, take medicines that affect fluid balance, or have been told to limit fluids, talk to a doctor before setting a goal. Never drink more than feels comfortable to unlock an app. Thirstgate limits logging to 1 litre an hour and 3.5 litres a day, but these limits are not a recommendation, and you are responsible for what you drink.

2. How the locks work

Thirstgate uses Apple’s Screen Time framework to lock apps you choose. The locks run under your control on your own device: you can remove them at any time, and iOS updates, Screen Time settings or other apps may change how well they work. We do our best but can’t promise that every app will always be locked or unlocked exactly when expected. Don’t rely on Thirstgate where a locked or unlocked app could put you or anyone else at risk; in an emergency, use the emergency pass or remove the lock.

3. Camera checks

Camera checks are an estimate made on your device and may sometimes accept or reject a drink wrongly. They’re there to help you keep a promise to yourself, not to verify anything for anyone else.

4. Thirstgate Plus

5. Your use of Thirstgate

We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use Thirstgate on Apple devices you own or control, as allowed by the Apple EULA. Please don’t copy, modify, reverse engineer or resell the app, or use it to monitor or restrict another person without their knowledge and consent.

6. Changes to the app and these terms

We may update Thirstgate, add or remove features, or stop offering it. We may also update these terms; we’ll change the date above, and for significant changes we’ll let you know in the app. Continuing to use Thirstgate after a change means you accept the new terms.

7. Warranty and liability

Thirstgate is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. To the fullest extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses, or for anything arising from what you choose to drink, from apps being locked or unlocked, or from missed reminders. Our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid for Thirstgate Plus in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law that can’t be limited, or liability that can’t legally be excluded.

8. Ending

You can stop using Thirstgate at any time by deleting it (and cancelling Plus in Settings, if you subscribe). We may end your licence if you break these terms.

9. Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the United Republic of Tanzania, except where the consumer laws of the country you live in give you rights that apply instead.
